Read MoreI am one of a group of volunteers who keep an eye on a herd of conservation grazing semi-feral Exmoor ponies, all geldings, and from this first course I have recognised many of the behaviours of the herd especially how there often isn't one particular leader and if one pony decides to move to another area to graze or perhaps drink at the trough or drink or paddle in the pond, very often the others will follow. It is interesting to learn how mares rarely play with their foals unlike the stallions who teach their offspring how to behave. I recognised the pair-bonding mentioned in the course and in our Exmoor herd the same pairs will often play-fight together. Two Exmoors joined the herd at the same time several months ago and they have stayed together like a bonded pair and are always side by side to snooze or to graze. There is one particular pony that will sometimes chase one of the two newer herd members and the pair will both move off together away from him.
