Equine Gastric Ulcers - Diagnosis, Prevention & Management

Many horse owners have a good understanding of gastric ulcers and how they are treated — but what about prevention? Equine vet and gastric ulcer expert Jessica Weigh will guide you through the latest research and what it means for horse owners and equine professionals in everyday practice.

Jessica will explore why gastric ulcers occur, how they impact your horse’s health, behaviour, welfare and performance. She will also look at how to recognise the signs, along with useful practical advice on prevention, treatment, effective feeding and management strategies.

This webinar will give you clear, practical tips to help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers, as well as guidance on best practices for feeding and management to support a healthy gut and minimise ulcer risk, whatever your horse’s discipline or whether they’ve experienced ulcers in the past.

Jessica looked at:

  • The basics — how gastric ulcers form, the different types, and clinical signs to look for

  • An overview of treatment options

  • What current research tells us about ulcer risk

  • Practical steps you can take to reduce that risk

  • Ideal management and feeding strategies

  • Real-life case studies

After the presentation, Jessica answered questions from the audience.

Your Instructor

JESSICA WEIGH

Jess worked in a busy general equine practice across North Wales for 4 years before setting up on her own purely doing gastroscopies for ulcers. She wanted to provide a dedicated service where she wasn't rushing off to the next call, and where she had time to coach owners through all stages of ulcer diagnosis and treatment. Jess has been providing this service since 2021 and loves her job! Jess has a huge interest in equine (and dog) behaviour and welfare, originally brought about by her rescue dog's behavioural issues. This co-exists beautifully with ulcer diagnosis and management, as many clinical signs are behavioural. It is Jess's passion to educate owners to recognise the signs their horses are giving them, without labelling them as "naughty". Jess works alongside being Mum to her beautiful daughter, who she hopes to get on a pony very soon!
